Science?
After reading a nice article on teaching children evolution, I decide to read other’s comments and perhaps comment myself. This always ends ugly. When commenting on science sites, it always feels one-sided; we’re there for that reason after all. So I went to Digg. Why? Hmmm… Of course every article on science or nature HAS to have some bible quotes strewn about with no interpretation. When I decided to throw in my two cents, it went something like: You can’t make an argument with only one reference. Circular reasoning makes one look like an idiot. I wasn’t directing it at anyone just speaking from a realistic, scientific point of view; from someone who has studied literature, debate, creative writing, and essays galore. I know what makes a good argument even if my blogs always seem like self-fulfilling vents. (I get tired after a while.) Obviously, this person responding with about 15 more quotes with no interpretation for what they could mean. In addition to the quote that the bible is the absolute authority and doesn’t need to be backed up… What kind of cult is this? No proof, reason, or understanding and one just has to be the correct one ALL THE TIME because its what Mommy and Daddy or Uncle Phil or Big Sis taught him as an impressionable young kid. In my response I had also said that believing what you want is fine, just don’t deny the wonders of science and nature. Nothing short of “I do believe evolution is silly” was the response for what I had said with back-up reasoning that was… WAIT! There wasn’t any! My only hope is that our children in future generations are taught science, nature, truth, and logic. We can only grow as a society if we focus on the truth, not what one needs to get by. People have a problem staying in order (the masses in general) and accepting the fact that this is it, so live it up!… So thereby religion grows into this cultish beast that preys on all who study science et al.
So where did it all begin? What I always gathered but not from religion or science completely; yet following much much more closely to science. Bing Bang can explain how it began, sure. But what about the idea that it never did begin? Just a thought. But who knows? The universe has always been here and always will be; full of wonder and beauty. Expanding, yes. But our knowledge and desire for that knowledge have been growing expanding as well. The idea that some “god” created Earth is far sillier than any evolutionary theory. What about all the other planets and galaxies, especially the ones yet to be discovered? What about other religions? If one doesn’t worship your way, he/she is damned to an imaginary fiery pit of make-believe? Good one.
I am an atheist and damn proud of it. I lived my whole life agnostic, despite what others tried to throw at me. The last step, letting go of the god theory, came a few years ago. I have never been happier and felt freer than when I finally admitted to myself there was no god. (Good, now we can finally enjoy this life instead of needless suffering, right?) It had been long coming. All my good morals come from logic, like not stealing or lying, which isn’t even clear that that’s wrong in the bible (based on some of the stories). That’s pretty much it, all the moral standings. Sex, love, happiness, enjoyment, fun, work are a few examples of stuff that has nothing to do with morality. For instance, if one was to lie to his/her gay partner, then the lying is the only thing that could be classified as something immoral. Helping others when necessary and such, but what good is the violent bible? I don’t believe that morals are learned from religion; those who need a book to tell them stealing is wrong have much bigger issues.
And no, atheists haven’t lost their faith; they just don’t need to believe in unicorns, that a flood could fill the Earth, or that you have to buy secrets to learn about your alien overlord.
