90% of Americans Believe in a God? Perhaps not…

I have linked to this article for one purpose only: To prove that many god-believers aren’t even sure of his/her beliefs. Many Americans claim a religion on government forms, but when it comes down to the tough questions, many just shrug. My thought is this: if one is going to have a belief, know what you believe in. Don’t try to debate when all your answers are “I don’t knows” or some flawed quote that ends up right where we began.

In addition, just because one is in some majority, doesn’t make that an argument. If all the girls develop anorexia and stop eating because thin is hot, I’m still going to eat well-balanced meals. Many types of slavery were also in the majority at one point. Being in the popular crowd doesn’t make you right, just one in the herd.

I strongly feel that if you’re going to have a belief, at least be certain of what you believe in (even if there is no evidence). If you’re not going to know yourself well, who else will ever take the time?

I have to agree with you on this point. There are many who sit in our congregations who do not know what they truly believe. This makes them unstable people(James 1:8) and thus, not good testimonies about our faith.
You are also right about the majority; that doesn’t make something right. Jesus even said, ” Enter through the narrow gate(talking about the kingdom). For the gate is wide and the road is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who go through it. How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14).
I do not feel that people who actually have faith in God are the majority at all. In fact, I would believe the number to be about 20% of who have actual faith.
I myself, believe in God and that He sent His Son to die on the Cross for our sins, so that we can be reconciled with the the Father. I also believe that God created the Universe and that it did not happen by chance.
There are some things that I do not know, but that does not make them untrue. That is what faith is all about.
Faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen(Hebrews 11:1).
    You are in my prayers.

Preach it, Sister! I agree with you wholeheartedly.
I have posted my own feelings about religion, christianity specifically on my own blog. I plan to write more as my thoughts evolve and as I get more articulate. ;)
My own thoughts stem from my family’s treatment by official representatives of a fairly liberal christian church. Not very long after my parents divorced (I was 17), the “leaders” pulled my mom aside and told her there was no room in “their” church for a divorced woman and her children. That was probably the weight that finally tipped the scales for me, although I’ve always been a “thinker” and never entirely felt comfortable while listening to the preached messages.
    A world without religion… that’d be something, wouldn’t it?!
