The Second Enlightenment

The concept of Enlightenment broadly means the acquisition of new wisdom or understanding perception. There are occurrences of some type of enlightenment throughout the history of the Buddhist, Judaic, Hindu, Christian, and Islam peoples. Most well known is the European Age of Enlightenment or simply The Enlightenment, which refers to the historical intellectual movement which advocated reason as the primary basis of authority.

But was is truly enlightening? The atheist, secular, humanist, and secular humanist movements have begun and because of the blogging digital age we can connect and push our causes further. Perhaps in the next 5, 10, or 25 years, atheists and humanists alike will be in the “trusted” majority.

Religion will not go quickly, nor will it go peacefully. But it’ll be a great day when an atheist can proudly decree his or her atheism without be afraid that coworkers, friends, and/or family could possible think negatively of it.

I like the idea of a Second Enlightenment. I have seen other atheists use it, but not all.

What do you think of the term “Second Enlightenment”?
