Atheism in America

This video got me thinking. If she was a Jew or Muslim, then it would be different. If a group were to hold hands and praise god, if one were to stand up and say I am Jewish, then some would retort, however you choose to worship god is fine. But as long as you worship? Clearly, they’d all be worshiping different gods. So how could that make any sense? They’ll probably have different ideals of some afterlife and a different idea on what god is to him/her.

So, then how would your Average Joe know what religion to choose? You are what you are born as? In Judaism, you are what your mother is. But what does that really mean? Is it a way to keep the Jewish race (its a race in this case) strong after all encountered atrocities? So then, Catholic parents automatically enroll their children into Catholicism previous to their birth. I guess what they call “original sin” I call “we are all born atheists”.

I can’t help but be reminded of Richard Dawkins assertion:

There is no such thing as a Christian child, there is only a child of Christian parents. Whenever you hear the phrase Christian child or Muslim child or Protestant child or Catholic child, the phrase should grate like fingernails on a blackboard.

I couldn’t agree more.

About Rose Schwartz

I’ve always felt very connected to the Jewish culture, while lacking faith in the stories. I started blogging in 2006, mainly due to the the fact that "godless" is all too often equated with "immoral". Read More »

It wasn’t too long ago that I was training for a new occupation in the army. During the graduation ceremony of the 6 month school, there was to be an invocation of the chaplain not once, but twice. Normally during these times I simply refuse to bow my head, and try to see how many other soldiers do likewise. Yet this time one of the sergeants in charge stopped the practice run through to let everyone know that during the invocation, you “will” bow your head, that if you don’t believe in god to “look at your shoes”.

I am reminded of the incident by this clip, of the prayer with the basketball game.

I wish I didn’t have to stand in silent acceptence to such an absurd ritual. To be honest I wasn’t an atheist when I joined. My dog tags still say Catholic. 2 more years, I guess.

I suppose the biggest thing that gets me though is exactly what you say – “how you worship is fine, as long as you do.” It’s a given that the chaplains are of a different christian sect (but always a christain sect) than those they preach to. I guess it doesn’t matter if you’re a Calvanist and the chaplain is a Methodist.

    Hi Larry,

I dealt with this several years ago and I hated the way the military promotes religion and rewards the “faithful” with time off to go to church.

I hacked my dog tags. You should too!

I’ve heard of that, and if and when I find out that I’m deploying to the sandbox I’ll be sure to order up a pair.

Great post. That Dawkins quote is spot on (I think it’s from The God Delusion, isn’t it?) Keep up the good work :-)

Infidelis Maximus, Thanks! The quote was also in numerous videos I’ve seen.
