Atheist Billboards Now Up In Denver

Seriously?

DENVER — We first told you about them last week and now they’re here. Eleven billboards in have gone up in metro Denver and Colorado Springs that question the existence of God. The first one went up at E. Colfax Avenue and Quebec Street in Denver. It says, “Don’t believe in God? You are not alone.” The two lines sit against a blue sky backdrop.

Yes, it’s true!

“It simply reaches out to people who have no belief in God and are feeling isolated by the religious world around them,” said Marvin Straus, co-founder of the Boulder Atheists.

“I’ve had feedback from people who thought it denigrated Christians. Totally untrue. It doesn’t talk about Christians, or Muslims, or Hindus or any religion. It’s specifically addressed to the non-believer.”

How comforting. And during a time when some tend to get lonely and blue. The holiday season is dominated with religious overtones, even though it has become rather secularized. As evangelicals declare “war” on what we all would like to share, it is nice to see some reaching out.

Just a general comment about your blog. I’ve been following it for a few days now and I really like your topics, how you write, and your approach. You’ve obviously been writing about atheism for way longer than I’ve probably even been one–or at least realized I’m one. I’ve yet to even write about being an atheist, although I’m in the process of writing something that will be the next post to my blog. I’d like to know what you think if you have the chance. Keep it up, I’m a fan.

I love those billboards! That they are up there is a wonderful indication that things are changing. Also, those signs that say “Don’t be good for god, be good for goodness sake” or something like that in the UK. Take that, God!
