Atheists United Meeting with Richard Haynes as Guest Speaker

On Sunday July 26th, (Brother) Richard Haynes — director of Atheist Nexus — spoke at the Atheists United meeting. We’ve known each other online for several years through our blogs and other projects; it was great to finally meet him.

Richard first spoke of his life with his wife and daughters leading to his own coming out. While overseeing much of what happens at Atheist Nexus, he’s taken it on as a near-full-time job. He spoke to the concept of the site: a Facebook for nonbelievers to meet, discuss, network, and befriend one another from across the globe as well as locally. It’s a great place to meet other atheists for discussion, networking, friendship, or even dating (as it is quite difficult it is to meet free-thinking friends and dates in many other settings).     I missed the meeting, but I wonder if Richard mentioned his position on the topic of the French proposal to Ban the use of the Burqa in their jurisdiction.

    He has made a public stand in support of the status quo, and against a ban, which in effect aligns his vote with that of the Taliban who also do not want to see it banned, but I was wondering if he expressed that at your meeting as well. Perhaps it never came up amid the other topics, but again I was not there so I am only guessing.

    I clicked on what I thought to be a video link above but it was just a slide-show so I am none the wiser. I am trying to find out just how far back, and for what reasons Richard has held this position so any help from you regarding anything relevant from his appearance there would be appreciated.

    Wow this Alber is crazy. He is the same guy who has stalked Brother Richard and Joe on the Atheist News site.

    For anyone who cares, what Alber claims is not true. What he is talking about came from a podcast where they clearly said they were against anyone being forced to wear the Burqa. However, it should be the individuals choice. There’s a lot more, but you get the point.
