What is science, again?

Posted by on Apr 7, 2008 in Essays, Rants | 4 comments

I was reading an interesting article at Black Sun Journal, which inspired me to ask “what is science, again?” In this article, BlackSun has a rare comment debate with a creationist and a homeschooler (with a biology degree) who teaches only creationism. So, what is science anyway? According to Science Made Simple: The word science comes from the Latin “scientia,” meaning knowledge. How do we define science? According to Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary, the...

The “issue” with Atheism

There are many degrees in how religious someone is, how deeply they believe, and what exactly they believe. I’m not sure what specific group I’m referring to (probably a little bit of all), but I have had some odd experiences I’d like to share. I’m also interested in seeing who has encountered similar experiences. From strong believers in the Christian faith to irreligious deists, I have found that some instantaneously work the defensive just by me merely stating...

I do not have a link, just a short essay by L. L. Sovrana. Why the Atheist Movement Needs a Kick in the A$$ (And a Few Ideas on How to Deliver Said Kick) The A-Word What happens when you say the word “atheist”? We’ve all gotten various reactions? Atheist is as loaded a word as you will find; it ranks up there with nigger, Nazi, and well-known swear words that begin with F or...

Sam Harris’ Response to Fellow Atheists

Posted by on Oct 8, 2007 in Essays, News, Rants | 4 comments

I agree with Sam Harris: My point, with respect to the term “atheist” (or any other), is that the use of a label invites a variety of misunderstandings that are harmful to our cause. There are many people in this country who do not believe in God and who understand that there is conflict between science and religion, but who do not feel the slightest inclination to join an atheist group or to label themselves in opposition to religion. These people are “atheists” by any...

Buddhism. And the Bipolar God.

In an interesting article from The Buddhist, thezennist discusses the evil of (the Christian) god. I really feel sorry for any kid, today, who has to say: “In God we trust,” because I finally discovered who God really is. He is the guy that invented evil. It is true. At lest that is what the Bible says at Isaiah 45:7. I form the light and create darkness, I bring good and create evil; I, the LORD, do all these things. I guess for some believers it is no big deal that their God...

Interesting Argument Against Agnosticism

Posted by on Aug 15, 2007 in Essays, Rants | 9 comments

Agnosticism comes in many forms. With agnostic theism, someone doesn’t know or it doesn’t matter. He/she believes in something while not adhering to any particular group. Perhaps someone just hasn’t made up his/her mind. And may or may not plan to either. I imagine its easier to just not think about it for some. Atheism also comes in many forms, many degrees. Since it denies the existence of a god or gods, I realized maybe 3 or 4 years ago agnosticism is definitely not for me....
