Ultra-Orthodox Discuss their Rules for the Internet

Apparently, the internet needs rules. Religious rules. Women weren’t even allowed to enter the room. That pretty much sums it up. No need to read on. Well, yeah, you might just in case: Tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jewish men attended a rally Sunday at the New York Mets’ stadium on the dangers of the Internet and how to use modern technology in a religiously responsible way. Women were not permitted to attend the meeting at Citi Field in Queens. However, it was broadcast live...

Don’t like Reddit’s r/atheism community? Just go to r/athiesm

Don’t like Reddit’s r/atheism community? Just go to r/athiesm

They call r/athiesm atheism for bad spellers but it seems to be another atheist community. Sure, it’s much, much smaller but the conversation is typically more fulfilling. There’s also been the addition of r/GodlessWomen for women concerned about the sexism in other communities. Also, for skepticism, check out r/skeptic. Personally, I don’t think r/atheism (spelled correctly) is that bad. What I mean to say is that there is no more misogyny than you would find in any...

Twilight of Violence: An Interview with Steven Pinker by Sam Harris

Sam Harris has a great interview with Steven Pinker on his latest book, The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined. Harris sits down with Pinker for a discussion about the history of violence. Sam Harris asks, “Need I remind you that the ‘atheist regimes’ of the 20th century killed tens of millions of people?” Steven Pinker has a great response. This is a popular argument among theoconservatives and critics of the new atheism, but for many reasons it is...

Gnostic/Agnostic ↔ Theist/Atheist Graph

There have been other versions around but I made this one. Initially, I made it to go with an Examiner piece. From gnostic to agnostic,  theist to atheist; there are many positions having to do with belief or possible knowledge of a belief. Gnostic and agnostic have to do with knowledge, while theist and atheist have to do with belief. Agnostic is not a mid point between atheism and theism. SHARE...

Marketed Beauty Products

Lately men have been getting a dose of what women have been getting for a lot longer. Though, equality is still way off in the distance. Most of the beauty products marketed to women (and, more recently, men) seem to be full of empty promises. I can’t speak about every beauty product out there in one sweeping remark but I’d bet that most them are unnecessary lies. It’s about time that men finally get a piece of that pie, though it’d be best for no one to have to receive...

Why does everyone keep leaving out Stef McGraw as if she doesn’t exist?

Why does everyone keep leaving out Stef McGraw as if she doesn’t exist?

She is the reason this blew up in the first place. I’m tired of seeing that it’s just a few men who don’t like Rebecca Watson personally. This is much deeper than that. I really want to move on from this but I keep reading the exact same perspective from big bloggers, completely ignoring Stef McGraw or stclairose. Is this on purpose to make a point? I feel like rational dissenter’s voices are being quelled for not going along with some form of groupthink. Stef’s...
