I’m sure Bush would have, too. This is the current state of American politics. Generally speaking, atheists are not liked. No matter what one truly believes, it doesn’t matter. Politicians must always inundate the people with their religious rituals. Especially those in the democratic party, who feel the need to backlash against conservatives calling them “godless”, as if that’s a bad thing.

While I am fairly certain Obama is a Christian (despite claims that he may be an closeted atheist), I do think he puts on a bit. He overreaches to the religious community and conservatives who says he’s actually Muslim or just not a “true Christian”. This is one of those times, where his efforts to please and appease some, isolates others.

Yesterday, a U.S. District Judge in Wisconsin ruled that the annual National Day of Prayer is unconstitutional.

“It goes beyond mere ‘acknowledgment’ of religion because its sole purpose is to encourage all citizens to engage in prayer, an inherently religious exercise that serves no secular function in this context,” wrote Judge Barbara Crabb, who said the Day of Prayer violates the First Amendment’s establishment clause, which bans the creation of a “law respecting an establishment of religion” in the Constitution.

…

The Obama administration had argued that the National Day of Prayer was legal because it simply acknowledged the role of religion in the United States, according to the Associated Press. But Crabb wrote that “it is because the nature of prayer is so personal and can have such a powerful effect on a community that the government may not use its authority to try to influence an individual’s decision whether and when to pray.” [Read more]

Well, this ruling is surely nice to hear. Keep religion out of government. There’s a little thing called the Separation of Church and State. Remember that little thing that the US was founded on? Yeah, that. While I agree with President Obama on some points, this is certainly one I take issue with.

I do like how Obama includes atheists in some of his speeches, but other times I feel left out and not considered at all. At least it’s better than Bush senior saying that he doesn’t think atheists are American. This is a huge reason that the so-called New (or Gnu) Atheists are vocal. In our respective communities and countries, we desire equal treatment and/or consideration. The way atheists are treated in some countries, it goes beyond unfair.

America is supposed to be great, with all this equality and freedom. Our founding fathers and mothers worked arduously to grant us certain freedoms. They started the fight. Many have picked up where they left off. And it’s far from over.

I just don’t get it. I partially feel as if this is all coming from a big misunderstanding but the intolerance and racism – nonetheless – is inexcusable. Did I miss the speech where Obama said he was giving Israel to someone else (as if he could)? Or the speech where Obama said he was going to bring about peace by giving into anyone?

One could easily note ‘racism isn’t only for white Christians’. If Jews are ‘white’, as I’ve been told my entire life, then so is everyone else in that region. Maybe by being in America for so many generations, you become white? No, that doesn’t make any sense. But I can’t see how you can just draw the line wherever you please.

Right in the middle of the video, a man utters “The Jewish people have always been very accommodating to people of all faiths”. How can he say that with a straight face? Where do I begin to rip that statement into shreds? Growing up, I was always told that Israel never does anything wrong and its always everyone else’s fault. Just recalling this, irks me quite a bit. It almost feels as if I’ve been lied to my whole life. I realize there may be more terrorists in the Islamic faith but Israel and Judaism is not fault-free by any means.

Via Planned Parenthood:

This morning, President Obama nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court to replace retiring Justice David Souter.

If confirmed, Sotomayor will be the first Hispanic woman to serve on the court, reminding us that, with hard work and commitment, all things are truly possible in America.

Judge Sotomayor has vast experience in nearly every aspect of the law, having served as a big-city prosecutor and a corporate litigator, a federal trial judge on the U.S. District Court, and an appellate judge on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

She understands that upholding the rule of law means going beyond legal theory to ensure consistent, fair, commonsense application of the law to real-world facts.

Here’s to a speedy confirmation.

No one can be sure how she will rule, but I have heard mostly good and neutral things regarding Sotomayor, as of yet. She’s a centrist, so Obama is trying to keep his promise by bridging the gap between left and right. Fairly played. As long as she fully understands and is dedicated to upholding the separation of church and state that our forefathers/mothers fought so hard for, I’ll be pleased.

In any case, she does have a long list of rulings and opinions.

I don’t know if its because she’s a women, a Hispanic, or not a staunch Conservative but some Republicans will do what ever they can to filibuster. Again.
