Hour 2 is coming soon…

On the 30th of September 2007, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens sat down for a first-of-its-kind, unmoderated 2-hour discussion, convened by RDFRS and filmed by Josh Timonen.

All four authors have recently received a large amount of media attention for their writings against religion – some positive, and some negative. In this conversation the group trades stories of the public’s reaction to their recent books, their unexpected successes, criticisms and common misrepresentations. They discuss the tough questions about religion that face the world today, and propose new strategies for going forward.

…it didn’t seem possible that things could go any lower or get any dumber. But they did last Friday, when, at a speech in Pittsburgh, Gov. Sarah Palin denounced wasteful expenditure on fruit-fly research, adding for good xenophobic and anti-elitist measure that some of this research took place “in Paris, France” and winding up with a folksy “I kid you not.”

To explain exactly why such research is important, he continues:

It was in 1933 that Thomas Hunt Morgan won a Nobel Prize for showing that genes are passed on by way of chromosomes. The experimental creature that he employed in the making of this great discovery was the Drosophila melanogaster, or fruit fly.

As I see it, it comes down to more than a difference of opinion of political or religious matters. A war on science will only through us deep into the New Dark Ages. The denying of the importance of scientific research should be the quintessential pivot point where we ask ourselves, Really, why? Unfortunately, there are some who just do not understand.

Projects such as sequencing the DNA of the flu virus, the better to inoculate against it, would not need to be funded. We could all expire happily in the name of God. Gov. Palin also says that she doesn’t think humans are responsible for global warming; again, one would like to ask her whether, like some of her co-religionists, she is a “premillenial dispensationalist”—in other words, someone who believes that there is no point in protecting and preserving the natural world, since the end of days will soon be upon us.

I suppose if the world is ending, what’s the point of doing anything anyway? How utterly depressing!

Hitchens uses “god”, while Dawkins uses “God”. My only assumption is that Dawkins is more of a people-pleaser nice guy, while Hitchens does not come off that way at all. Could this be the reasons behind why there’s a lack of consistency? What are your thoughts?

and were content to just bash my point of view?* I agree with Hitchens in this respect because I “God” is not a name to me. It may be a name to people within a specific group, but it is a group I do not belong to. Just as the Jewish G-d, which I am closer to, at least culturally.

I do not try to convince theists to deconvert; I am not on some mission. If you haven’t noticed, this is more of a ranting blog with videos and images and short opinions. I do not write essays, not since college of course. Since I studied film and creative writing, that’s basically all I did. I just don’t have the time or energy for that. I applaud those who do: Good Work! But its not my style. I write short stories, short poems, and short opinion pieces; I generally try keep it pithy and succinct.

* If you wish to leave a comment, please don’t just proclaim to me why I should capitalize the “G”.

Why do some atheists use God with a capital “G”, including many authors? Isn’t that giving their(theists) god precedent over reality. The Greek gods aren’t capitalized, nor should the Christian god, the Jewish god, the Muslim god, et al.

Many believe “God” is a proper noun. My question is this: if there is any doubt or confusion on the existence of something, then how is it a proper noun?

I’ve been doing some atheist reading. After The God Delusion, I read a book for my book club through work. Completely unrelated, Made To Stick is actually a very good book as it applies to many aspects of life.

Upon finishing it, I decided to go back to some atheist reading. Currently, we have God Is Not Great and God: The Failed Hypothesis at home and I figured I’d tackle the larger one first: God Is Not Great.

I won’t give any reviews yet, but I noticed something worth mentioning (to me, anyway). Hitchens uses “god”, while Dawkins uses “God”. My only assumption is that Dawkins is more of a people-pleaser nice guy, while Hitchens does not come off that way at all. Could this be the reasons behind why there’s a lack of consistency?
