In the Search for an Alternative to God, Humanist Rabbi Greg Epstein Offers Some Input
The subtitle “The Ordained Rabbi Leading Harvard’s Humanist Chaplaincy Says He Isn’t Out To Poach Souls for Atheism” did make me go WTF?! Poach souls? People will always make bizarre comparisons. That aside, Humanist Rabbi Greg Epstein has a realistic approach. “I don’t see us competing, because there’s so many options around here,” said Epstein, a dapper, charismatic, 34-year-old with a shaved head and stubble. “But I think this provides an option that is sorely...
Read More“grandfather on God and Richmond, right-justified”, a poem (not mine)
I came across this poem and found it very interesting. I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with poetry. I used to write it a lot, most of which was fairly crappy. I studied creative writing as my second major in college (no minor). I took a poetry class but decided to go the route of short fiction. I did, however, meet with one of my professors for a period of time to discuss my poetry and learned some valuable assets. And I learned how easily good poetry can go bad. All this...
Read MoreAtheistic Judaism is more popular than it seems
It’s weird. A very strange concept. I was raised with the notion that being Jewish doesn’t mean you take the idea of god literally. My dad was basically an atheist but wouldn’t admit it. He was also an apologist and didn’t understand why I was an “atheist”. He once said something along the lines of “Being Jewish has nothing to do with belief in God or meeting grandma in Heaven when you die.” He wouldn’t discuss religion with me much further....
Read MoreDifferent kinds of feminism must always start with Choice
Occasionally I hear about Middle Eastern or Islamic feminism. The notion states that women in, let’s say, Saudi Arabia have a different notion of feminism, that they have chosen to cover their faces. I don’t see where the choice is; with death, stoning, imprisonment, etc as a punishment for not wearing a niqāb. Even in France or the United States, a Muslim woman may cover her face. It may be her choice but I have a funny feeling that most, if not all, of those cases begin with her...
Read MoreRabbi Hirschfield peddles the myth that atheists are angry at god
First of all, I’m not shocked that this piece comes directly from Huffington Post. HuffPo is known for overly woo-ridden posts and a bunch of assumptions I don’t go along with. Except for the occasional good piece, I’m generally not a fan. I came across this lovely post thanks to the wonders of Google Alerts. Rabbi Brad Hirschfield assumes a lot of things about atheism and goes along with a lot of well-rehearsed myths. Anger at God is nothing new…But however far back...
