I always had issues with the phrase “the chosen people”. It wreaks of bigotry to me, stating that we are better for no other reason than we are us. I understand where this comes from but I cannot embrace it, by any means. I don’t think any group is better than any other group by the mere description of what they are. That stated, theists who are certain everyone who doesn’t believe in their version of religion will go to hell (a place they “know” exists) can be such assholes.

This sort of ignorance is quite common in the United States, as we saw when Ann Coulter said Jews need to be perfected. My jaw dropped when my mother agreed. :\

Though, I appreciate Keith’s calling out, he wasn’t my favorite. So this image shouldn’t imply that I don’t watch MSNBC since he’s been gone. I do think Rachel Maddow is a better reporter. I really like her a lot and have ever since she filled in for Keith. I also have taken a liking to Lawrence O’Donnell’s no bullshit attitude.

But the pun and parody was too delicious!

…Not that Jesus’ original stuff is all that great. The cartoonist made him look better with these chosen quotes on the left. The right, well, that’s obvious: he’s Jesus Douche. A douche with a capital BAG.

I enclosed a screen capture of the quote because the site that houses this quote (TVLoop) says they “will be shutting down Nov 30, 2010″. Hmm. So I chose not to link. Anyway, it’s Roger from American Dad.

What about Jesus’ thoughts regarding rape or slavery? He was not that great then, when his word was accurate. His so-called teachings were moderate at best. That being aside, where does the American religious right get their ideals from? I understand the conservative ideology (though I don’t agree with it in almost every way), but I don’t really get why they distort him. Yet, upon further reflection, I suppose I do. They cling to this notion of Jesus because, most likely, if Jesus ever existed as a person— he hung out with whores, probably smoked herb, had long hair. He was not the religious right’s idea of proper. So they cling to this fake ideal of Jesus who was created far more recently than the original. Whether or not Jesus did exist is not really important in the context of this post. If we agree that Jesus (even as a mythological character) spoke about some concepts, they seem to have been lost by the people who claim to understand him the most.

But what do I know? My people killed him, right? :P

Glenn Beck like L. Ron Hubbard – Bill Maher’s appearance on Sunday’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS” is getting a lot of attention online today. The host of “Real Time with Bill Maher” was asked how much he thinks the Tea Party is about religion. Maher focused on FOX News’ Glenn Beck, saying, “I think he’s doing what some people before him have done, like L. Ron Hubbard, who is a novelist, and decided, ‘You know what? It’s a much easier gig to be a religious leader.’ ”

I can see it now. Beck, making millions off of gullible people, wearing gold coins and crosses shining directly into your pupils! Glenn Beck will:

• Blind you with his awesomeness (it’s actually the glint from the cheap gold).
• Set you free (you are “free” to follow him into the gates of a metaphorical hell).
• Lead you (to an early death? More anger and stress? More bigotry?).
• Watch over you (to make sure you’re still sending money to the right people).

Is Glenn Beck like L. Ron Hubbard? I can see where Bill Maher would get that from. There are striking similarities, mainly stemming from their mental health struggles. The paranoia, distrust of doctors. The aversion to positive change, dwelling on what could have or should have been, in a world that’s just an offshoot of reality. These are signs of mentally instable individuals who choose to stay unhealthy. This behavior is not only damaging to others, but themselves. Beck’s rants and made-up tangents may remain the non-sequitur of the abstract world or may become something greater, a larger force to reckon with.

I just hope Bill Maher didn’t give Glenn Beck an idea.
