Orthodox Jews Shun Other Jews for Reporting Child Abuse

Some Orthodox Jews have been shunning others for reporting Jewish child molesters. This is one of those gut-curdling stories. From The New York Times: The first shock came when Mordechai Jungreis learned that his mentally disabled teenage son was being molested in a Jewish ritual bathhouse in Brooklyn. The second came after Mr. Jungreis complained, and the man accused of the abuse was arrested. Old friends started walking stonily past him and his family on the streets of Williamsburg. Their...

Carl Sagan, Exquisite World (Wallpaper)

Using the same quote from a previous Carl Sagan image, I made this wallpaper. Also 2880 x 1800 pixels. Jesse Bering’s mother died of cancer on a Sunday, in her own bed, at 9 o’clock at night. Bering and his siblings closed her door and went downstairs, hoping they might somehow get some sleep. It was a long, hard night, but around 7 a.m., something happened: The wind chimes outside his mother’s window started to...

Palestinian family evicted from their home of 70 years by Israeli settlers

Posted by on Jul 29, 2010 in News, Rants | 3 comments

Peace in this region seems to be but a myth. Israeli settlers took over a Palestinian home in the Muslim quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City today, evicting about 45 members of an extended family which has occupied the building for more than 70 years. The settlers claimed to have documentation to prove they had purchased the building from the owners. The Palestinian tenants, who have been fighting attempts to evict them for many years, were challenging the takeover in court. … According...
