Proposition 8 has been declared unconstitutional. Finally.

Prop 8 is overturned. Activists and progressives who are concerned with equality and justice just exhaled the biggest rainbow-colored breath. I have written about this divisive and ugly proposition and the following protest (one of the many). So how cool is this news on this blogger’s 48th birthday: Proposition 8, the horrible and neurotic (Who cares who marries whom?) law prohibiting Gay marriage was overturned today, Wednesday, August 4th, 2010. In other words, by “Memorandum...

Why the Proposition 8 Ruling Matters to Atheists

[More photos] Vjack writes an important and moving post concerning the implications for atheists from the Proposition 8 California Supreme Court Ruling. Proposition 8 should be a nightmare scenario for any atheist because it shows us that well-funded religious groups can essentially mold the law to enforce their bigotry. Like I said I would be, I went to the Prop 8 protest. A huge group was marching from West Hollywood into Hollywood (where we showed up), where they stopped for chalk drawing protests and taking vows to continue to fight. “I do!” (Don’t mind the misspelling…separate is not equal either ;) ) [View Slideshow in Full Screen] [View Entire Photo Set] EDIT: See more photos at Eric’s site. With all this talk of the California Supreme Court upholding Prop 8, I hear a lot of how it all comes down to one word: Religion. And rightly so, but certainly not 100%. And I speak from experience. My grandmother (who would never read this blog*), is vehemently opposed to same-sex anything. Being a Jew, you’d think she’d see the hypocrisy, but according to anyone in the right wing, sexuality is a choice. (I find it sad that, with this assertion, not a single homophobic person has...

Stripping Mormon Church of Tax Exempt Status

Posted by on Feb 11, 2009 in News | 2 comments

Bad new for Mormons and fundies alike, this Prop 8 stuff isn’t going away: During the election, the Mormon Church pumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into the push to ban same-sex marriage in California — a campaign that deprived people in a different state [from where the church is based] of a fundamental civil right. LDS officials initially claimed they donated $2,078 to the Yes on 8 campaign (although direct donations by individual members exceed $20 million). But recent tax...
