What ever you wish to make of it.

Last Friday I posed a question, What’s the point?

From the true believer’s perspective, I have a difficult time understanding what the point actually is. Are we just a show for some other larger being that sculpted us from dirt and clay? To me, that’s pretty bleak, but it’s someones else’s bliss (no matter how much I can’t fathom that being a comforting thought). There’s no freedom of choice or will. But as long as one’s good without those silly things, then its all good.

From the reform believer’s perspective, who may not believe in the creation story but still holds a belief for a higher power, I can’t quite comprehend what reason you have for worshiping a being that watches over us but lets bad as well as good things happen? What’s the point of believing in something that merely endures?

What’s the point?

My mother recently asked me this, as pertaining to life itself. What’s the point of it all?

To summarize her point: we’re born into an imperfect world filled with suffering, only to grow old and watch everyone around you die. Then, die yourself. Hopefully without much pain. Hopefully without the need to depend too much on those around you in those latter days.

Sounds like a pretty bleak world view. But Mom believes in God. Not the religious Judea – or even – Abrahamic version, but an indescribable being of love and kindness who looks over her and those around her. (Close to that of deism, but she actually prays – the kind that’s in one’s head and not kneeling before the bed.) How sweet, I suppose… But I can’t comprehend why said being is not responsible for all this suffering and death? As full of contradictions as that may be, she still persists in her belief. It may be a combination of a fear of loneliness, other meme-conditioning, and a general desire to just believe. But she’s awesome because we have had a few conversations discussing where our ideas fork and she seems to get it for the most part- that is, my world view.

Beauty & Purpose

Evolution is beautiful. This amazing process spanning over billions of years coagulated into one awesome theory. No matter how many times I post about evolution, I can never say it enough.

I’m not really here to debate creationism, though it may seem so. My main goal is to shed light on why evolution rocks all socks.

Creationism directly implies you must accept an entire religious doctrine in addition to a simple theory on the origin of life. Science makes no claims on what your beliefs may or may not be outside the realm of what is proven in a particular instance.

(I stated that in this post.)
