Apparently Atheists and Evangelicals can work together

As I always say to random street preachers on the crowded city streets of Hollywood, “Hell isn’t real if you don’t believe it.”

In any case, it seems like there are atheists with a sense of humor from my home state.

Witter started his website — postrapturepost.com — as a joke, a satiric jab at those who see things like the swine flu, economic collapse and the election of a liberal president as sure signs the end is near.

But then he started receiving orders for his merchandise.

Since 2005, Witter said he has sold more than 200 items, most of them T-shirts and coffee mugs, and many of those (he admits) to friends and fellow atheists.

Among the best sellers are the line of I-Told-You-So cards, which sell for $8.

Some who ordered the cards — Witter suspects they are not actually Christians — are willing to pay extra to have them sent early as Christmas cards.

Reminds me of how liberals and conservatives can like Stephen Colbert for very different reasons.

After reading The God Delusion and making it partially through God Is Not Great (not to mention partially through a few others) I realized I was not in the market for a serious book at this time. I was for a bit but then I needed to unwind from getting annoyed with discrimination and being misunderstood. I needed a good fun read. Well, I had a gift card to Borders and it’s right near the game store. Need for Speed didn’t work (race car game that we had to exchange) but Stephen Colbert’s I Am America (And So Can You) never malfunctions or lets you down in any way. I’m only on the 3rd chapter as of yet; can’t wait to see how it turns out!

I’m sure Stephen himself would be pleased to know I got it at a 30% discount….no wait, he would be very upset to hear people aren’t paying full price. Yet I also used a gift card, so the even cheaper book was actually free.

In any case, it was worth every penny.

Unicorn Goddess Save Me Now

I have been here, there, everywhere seeking, searching, reading. I’m interested in religion and their willingness to believe. I’m interested in a lot of things. But this always gets me… If, at any time, one has to say “suspend disbelief”, you lost me. And if, at any time, you try to cross any religion with any bit of science or logic, you lost it!

What makes this specific story any different than unicorns and leprechauns. Fun fictional fairytale characters; that’s it. Religion has so many story that aren’t even good fairytales; but depressing, cruel, sexist, racist, homophobic, etc.

The mere fact that educated, well-rounded, logical, sexual beings like us could completely bypass all logic in one area of their mind baffles me. Stephen Colbert said it best. The other day while I was watching only one of the funniest shows on television these days, Colbert uttered a phrase that completely sums up it all. There’s the usual religion/society conversation he would have with the guest (forgive me I can’t remember right now), where he launches the debate with something along the lines of:

I’m a god-fearing christian who believes the bible is the ultimate word of truth. That being said; let’s have a reasonable discussion.

Exactly.
